I first noticed it a few weeks ago. The green of summer foliage had faded. I blinked my eyes to make sure I was seeing this change from the Sherwood Forest green to the Bib lettuce green.
I noticed the stalks of corn, green and tasseled, now had a creeping beige up from their roots. Leaves of soybeans were tinged with yellow.
Mums were being substituted for the summer blooms in the yards of neighbors.
In just days the corn was all brown to the top of the stalk and the farmers went through the fields and pulverized and blew it into trucks that took it away. That's when I got my horizon back.
The V-shaped formations that seemed so recently to have been flying north now were headed south.
Cider and pumpkin spice become prominently displayed at the grocery.
Soccer, cross-country and football were in full swing.
And so it goes. The seasons change, coming and going with the most precise regularity and we accommodate to the seeming acceleration of the change. Or we don't.
And that's what I think about it.

I LOVE fall - actually, I love each season and the promises they hold. Maybe it's just the change of scenery that I love so much. I always wondered how folks could like living in a place that doesn't have 4 seasons...
Right now we are going from brown to more brown... :-) Actually, our yard is a very lovely shade of green, the roses are still blooming, the figs are turning purple and the pomegranates are getting redder!
