Recent Reads
Flies on the Butter by Denise Hildreth and The Shack by William P. Young are both good reads about forgiveness. If you consider yourself a conservative or fundamental Christian, forget about reading The Shack. Yesterday I read a 17-page debate about the book on the web. There was a lot of name calling.
Children of Jihad by Jared Cohen is about 'a young American's travels among the youth of the Middle East.' Jared is naive. Example, he tells a group of Hezbollah youth that he is an American Jew. Another time he falls asleep in a taxi and ends up in Mosul, Iraq. Yet his travels give us first-hand insight into the beliefs and behaviors of young people in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Syria.
Right now I'm reading Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone by Rajiv Chandrasekaran. Can't recommend it but I'm reading it. It may speak of more truth than I'm willing to accept.

Patricia! I hope that all is well in the US... I am in Bosnia now. I will be home in August and can't wait to hear from you and Jim :)
You are such a globe-trotter. I want to hear all the stories and will try to make arrangements to get up there (Ohio) in August when you return. Be safe.
Hi mom! (Ken Schneider here.) So, Imperial Life in the Emerald City: "Can't recommend it but I'm reading it. It may speak of more truth than I'm willing to accept."
Interesting comment. We published that book. ("We" meaning the company I work for.) The book was chosen as one of the best non-fiction books of 2006 by Entertainment Weekly (for whatever THAT's worth) and by the Los Angeles Times. And it won the 2007 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction and the 2006 Overseas Press Club of America award. You wouldn't recommend it? Why?
Yrs,
k
P.S. I haven't read it--yet. But I can't resist asking, heh heh.
Ken, my long lost 'son.' Send money!
"Imperial..." is page after page after page of government waste, lost opportunities, power struggles and cronyism, deaf ears, cultural incompetence...and I could go on.
I'm a patriot, red, white and blue and although I am not unaware of the above, every time I read about it it makes me sad, and angry, and frustrated.
Other than that, it's a fine read. Also your company might have considered including photos in this book although the visual pictures painted in word are vivid.
Keep in touch my friend.
