You're in the Army Now

You've probably seen pictures or read news stories about army buddies getting together year after year to recount their experiences in the military. My husband does not have a support group like that and as a result, I get to hear stories about his time in the National Guard.

It was in the 60s. Many people thought that the National Guard was state-side and thus not seeing any action. Au contrare. My husband was on duty during the worse flooding in Newark, Ohio; the trucker strike in Richfield, Ohio where armed citizens stood atop overpasses to shoot at big rigs as they careened down the highway, and he was in uniform at Kent State (now you might want to know that I also was at Kent State at this time, but not in uniform...but that is a story for another day).

I am in full 100% support of our troops. I have always felt that they are well-trained and led.

That said, my husband's military training leaves me puzzled.

One fine morning at Fort Knox, he and three others were ordered to get their driver's licenses for a 'deuce and a half' (see photo). These trucks are troop transports. The Sergeant who had been given the order to test these fine recruits bundled them into a jeep and went on a search for a truck in which to test their abilities None was to be found. Not wanting to fail at following orders, the Sergeant diligently looked all over the base for a truck, for an hour and a half. No luck. And so, he drove back to headquarters and signed all their licenses. They had all passed.

My ponderings? How much do these trucks cost to replace? What about pilots? Do they have 'real' licenses to fly? And tank drivers? And cooks?

My husband was in intelligence. It's scary really, but I still support our troops. One hundred percent.

That's what I'm thinking about today.
